Wallpaper Engine lets you use live wallpapers on your Windows desktop. You can create your own animated live wallpapers and instantly share them with other friends. Many different types of animated wallpapers are supported such as 3D & 2D animations, websites, videos and even some applications. You can completely customize your very own animated wallpapers and use interactive wallpapers that can be controller with your mouse. Wallpapers will pause while playing games to save performance of course. Wallpaper Engine can be used at the same time as any other steam game or application. This download includes the workshop patch which enables more features.

Generally, Wallpaper Engine does not support editing downloaded wallpapers itself. However, it is usually possible to edit wallpapers depending on their type (you can find the type below the preview image on the right) with the help of third-party applications.

Scene wallpapers are packed into a .pkg file which is not editable out of the box because it is missing all project-related data. Trying to open a .pkg file will result in the error "Packed wallpapers cannot be opened." to be shown. An analogy would be that .jpeg image files also do not come with Photoshop project data attached - this is always left on the system of the original author.

However, community members have created an unofficial scene wallpaper unpacking tool, which allows you to unpack Scene files and use them as a starting point for your own wallpapers. See this website for more information:

You will still need to have a valid project.json file, you can create one by simply creating a new empty wallpaper in the editor, closing the Wallpaper Engine and then unpacking the downloaded wallpaper and copy-pasting its contents into the new project directory.

If you want to edit one of your own wallpapers that you have previously lost the project files for, see the Updating a lost project section below for more infos on what changes you need to make to the project.json so that you can push updates to your existing wallpapers.

Generally, application wallpapers cannot be edited. Application wallpapers are usually compiled programs which means you do not have access to the source code. If you really want to change application-based wallpapers, try contacting the author of the wallpaper and see if they are willing to help.

If you deleted your project you can still overwrite it, but depending on the type of wallpaper you published, you may not be able to edit it anymore. Create a new wallpaper as usual and open its project directory with Edit -> Open in Explorer. Open the project.json file with a text editor, it will look something like this:

Asset creation and sharing is meant for advanced users to share wallpaper components with new users or for your own purposes. If you want to create an asset for others to re-use in their wallpapers, you first have to enable the asset creation options in the editor. These are hidden by default to avoid that they confuse new users when trying to publish a wallpaper.

You can enable asset creation and sharing in the View menu by clicking Enable Asset Creation. This will enable a few extra buttons throughout the editor that allow you to create new effects and share elements from your wallpaper.

If you're sharing multiple layers, you can share them as an asset pack. This option will allow the user to only import one of those layers into their wallpaper and not all at once. This is useful if you want to create a bunch of similar particle effects, for example, but the user is expected to only import one or a few of them and not all together.

Wallpaper Engine enables you to use live wallpapers on your Windows desktop. Various types of animated wallpapers are supported, including 3D and 2D animations, websites, videos and even certain applications. Choose an existing wallpaper or create your own and share it on Steam Workshop!

Anthony began to get up and look around the cabin. It was a decent size, with outdated wallpaper plastered on the walls. Along the back wall, there sat a bed and a small bookshelf. In the center of the room was a small dining table, with tableware settings placed for two. And on the side closest to the door, there was, what looked like, a workbench.

Winzlow hadn't been paying attention to the doctor. Instead, his focus was more on the house. From the outside, he had seen at least two windows on the side of the cabin. But the room he currently stood in only showed one window on the wall. The wallpaper showed no sign of a hidden doorway or anything of interest. The only thing suspicious was the oddly door-sized bookcase along the back wall.

Winzlow put the device down as if he had been handed a seismic mine. This room was like a box filled with the worst of the worst of red flags it could have contained. From the wallpaper that had an uncanny similarity to the one his grandma used to have to the two set plates indicating that ether the two had been expected, a person they were not aware of was nearby or a crazy person talking to someone imaginary.
